4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it needs to do--with a few limitations I'm giving this little kettle 4 stars as there are a couple VERY minor things I'm not crazy about. For the most part, it's just exactly what it needs to be---a kettle that heats water, quickly. I really like the fact that I can choose the exact degree that I want to heat to, although I usually just get to 210-212 and use it since that's basically boiling water. The cover for the base is a thoughtful addition since once in awhile a few drops of water are on it after boiling the water. One minor annoyance is that the base isn't 100% solid on the counter and when you push the start button, the base wobbles a bit. I hold it with my other hand and that takes care of it but 4 feet instead of 3 feet on the bottom would have eliminated that. Also, those feet on the bottom are made of a material that doesn't slide well on my granite countertop. The final annoyance is that if you fill the kettle to the Max line as shown on the inside and set it to boil at 212 degrees, the boiling action of the water will cause quite a bit of water to splash out the holes in the lid and you will have water on the base (which is what the cover is for) and on your countertop. I never use it to the max line so it isn't an issue, but if you want to boil a full pot, you need to be prepared for that overflow of boiling water. So, for me, it works fine. For someone else, I wanted to point out the nuances of using it so that you are prepared if you decide to buy it.

The material is thin so should be careful to avoid denting it. Dont touch it when it’s hot hence it doesn’t hold heat long. This pot reminds me Korean noodle pot, heat up fast, don’t hold heat and easy to dent. After five month of usage, I noticed water stain at the bottom of the pot that hard to reach. I use only bottle water, so I guess mineral buildup is natural. I like this pot but shocked by the price hike. One person found this helpful

Cant believe it's going to be 4 years of daily use consisting of at least twice a day!It has some tiny stains inside reminding rust but I refuse to touch it or scratch the surface as it never changed after 1st month of use. Thermostat sometimes gets bugged and clicks before it finally decides the water is indeed boiling hot. Temperature setting is just awesome.I would not ask for any other kettle than this ever again. The quality here makes me confident in future purchase of anything Bonavita brand made.Only thing is to never bump the spout against wall when settling it back into its base near a wall as repetitive bumps would surely break the spout off, one may say it could be welded thicker but then it would not resemble classic kettle. I would welcome stronger base rubberized feet to prevent sliding as that would also help to immense the spout break when tossed into the base in hurry.The price today is about 40 bucks higher by current sellers, not sure if it is worth at this point, but sure as heck was back then, hoping itll last for ever!If there's any negative I would think of? Make it a 220/240 volt or with dual 110V inverter for quicker heat.Europeans are lucky with their power grid, water boils in less than a minute over there, here in the US it takes a while but still, this little gadget sure does its job perfectly and I prefer it over regular kettles that need to be placed on top of either electric or gas stoves.Sure saves fire hazard in one of those mornings when you feel like falling back asleep while setting the pot of water for boiling, it actually happened and if only person in the household, it sure would not end up good. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great kettle I purchased this kettle in 2019. I love the aesthetics, temperature control and spout design for pour over control. Recently, the temperature setting started becoming erratic and would sometimes just shut off. The warranty and Amazon return window have both expired. I reached out to Bonavita customer service and they were responsive and helpful, suggesting I try a vinegar/water mixture to descale the kettle. It worked! It's back to functioning as well as it did when I purchased it in 2019. Would highly recommend.

Quiet.The timer is a really nice touch. I love that the lid stays on (even if you turn the thing completely upside down). The pour is beautiful and easy to control. I've been brewing some killer high-end single region coffees in my Hario V-60 with this kettle. Lovin' life.There is one teeny tiny little issue though ... it won't heat past the boiling point at higher altitudes. No joke. Hear me out.I'd been eyeballin' this kettle for a while, and finally decided to pull the trigger when I found out I'd be staying in a hotel in Tampa, Florida for a 7 day conference. If you enjoy manually brewing high-end coffee as I do, you'll sympathize with my plight. At risk of sounding snobby (Oh what the H? It's cool. I'm a coffee snob. I can admit it), there's no way I was going a week drinking Starbucks or whatever else they served at the hotel/convention center. So I ordered this bad boy and brought my grinder and brew gear with me. I was delighted with my brilliance and enjoyed tasty brews all week while the rest of the attendees suffered through.While in Florida, I daily heated the water to precisely 205°F for perfect extraction. With this kettle, it was easy peasy. Having successfully survived my stint in Tampa, I returned home to beautiful Colorado, eager to brew up some tastiness for my wife and hang out over a delicious cup. To my surprise, once home, the kettle wouldn't heat over 200°F! No joke. I set it for it's max setting (212°)... and still no go. 200°--That was it. I busted out the trusty candy thermometer to make sure that the kettle's internal thermometer was reading correctly, and sure enough, right on 200°.I suspected that the altitude was the issue (I live at a beautiful 6743 ft. above sea level), but just in case, I returned the kettle to Amazon and had them send me a new one. [Side note: Amazon's exchange policy is amazing. They sent me a new kettle right away via 1 day shipping for free. I had the new one the next day, and they gave me a couple weeks to return the old one on their dime. Well done, Amazon. Thank you.] The new kettle performed exactly like the old one, so that proved that the elevation made the difference.Of course we all know that variance in elevation, and the subsequent change in air pressure, alters the temperature at which water will boil. Water boils at 212°F at sea level, but boils at 199.2°F at my house in the high country of Colorado. This, I understand. Why this kettle can't continue heating the water past the boiling point, on the other hand, I don't understand.This kettle is rad and it boils water beautifully. But it will only go as hot as the boiling point and no further. If you live at or near sea level, then you're golden. But if you live, for instance, on the top of Pikes Peak (14,114 ft.), then you're looking at a max water temp of 186.8°F. But you've got awesome views! 2 people found this helpful

4.0 out of 5 stars Broke after a few years, don’t get the base wet I liked this kettle but I bought three because they only last a few years. This Bonavita seems rather fragile, the base just stopped working twice and the spout came off once. I was careful to leave the plastic cover on it after the first base broke (which is gross and ugly) but it didn’t seem to work. I’m not that rough with my things, I haven’t broken all of my other appliances and my china! Now I have a Cosori gooseneck with preset temps which is great and hasn’t broken yet. Also, the new kettle doesn’t burn my hand when I put cold water in the hot kettle, something to do with the shape of the handle being less curved and further away I think. 3 people found this helpful

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice, very precise This is an excellent little kettle. It's the first we've purchased that precisely controls the water temperature. Who knew that coffee brewed at 200ºF would taste better than coffee brewed at 212ºF? And and the reverse for tea.It's a small kettle (1 liter) with a small spout - both take a little getting used to. It's also slightly slower than our prior electric kettles (and all seem to be slower in the US, with 110v versus the UK with 220v - maybe that's why they use 220??). The small spout is much more precise, and I haven't yet gotten the steam burns I used to, when I'd forget and reach past the spout. An unexpected benefit.Once you get used to filling it to the top for two 12-oz cups, all is good.One can see how the design engineers optimized the controls and minimized the overall number of controls. It's a bit geeky, but so is the kettle itself. One thing is that the operational modes depend on whether the kettle is sitting on the base or not. When you lift the kettle off, you can set the "count-up" timer to time, e.g., how long your tea has steeped. Forget and put the kettle on its perch and the timer stops. And when you remove the kettle, the "temperature hold" capability goes off and has to be re-engaged when the kettle is re-seated.One can manually set a target temperature, and separately press a button to say whether to hold the target temperature once it's reached. Holding it should probably be the default (it's held for, I believe, 7 minutes), but it probably defaults to not holding, for energy and safety reasons.The kettle has a set of factory preset temperatures. So you can pick among the presets and not have to use the + or - buttons that you use to manually set the temperature. One trouble: the temperatures we use (200º for coffee, 212º for certain black teas) are not in the set of presets(!). Another trouble is, you can't set your own presets. Bonavita provide an instruction booklet with recommended target temperatures. If coffee and black tea are the most commonly consumed, why aren't those temperatures included in the presets?The kettle does remember the last temperature you manually set, so you don't have to forage through the presets. If you're single or every user in the household drinks the same type of beverage, you're all set. But the kettle only remembers one temperature and forgets that when you set another or search through the presets, so a family of coffee *and* tea drinkers will end up having to use the + and - keys to set preferred temperatures.If I'd change anything on this kettle, it would be to be able to save a preferred target temperature, perhaps by remembering the last 5 set, or in the same way one saves a preferred radio station on a push-button radio (e.g., press and hold, until a beep or flash acknowledges the save). Likely the best approach, considering the limited smarts of the circuitry and people's limited set of preferences, would be to have the personal preference bump some factory preset - maybe limited to 5 presets).All of that said, I really like this kettle and would buy another one when needed. 4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect! There is a justified lovefest going on here with this kettle, and I'm enjoying mine, but I can't give it a 5-star rating. I have a few suggestions for future improvements to this already great product:1.) Make it so that once you select HOLD, you don't have to keep pressing the Hold button each time you take it from the base to do a pour if you want HOLD to continue.2.) Put a pouring spout on the larger capacity, 1.5L model with the 1500w base. And make the pouring spout diameter slightly bigger to allow a little more water volume. The pouring rate from this kettle is more slow and delicate than necessary, even for Hario type pourovers.More than once with this 1L unit, I've run out of water doing a pour. Once you use some of the heated water to rinse the filter, heat the cups, etc., there isn't much left for more than a couple of 8oz. cups of tea or coffee.My old Chef's Choice water kettle has a 1500w base and can heat more quickly than this 1000w unit. Part of the reason besides the higher wattage heating element is that it goes to full boil without any cycling. Sometimes, you just want to heat a bunch of water to boiling as quickly as possible!Perhaps these units should have a 212 degree setting with auto cutoff like standard kettles do?You might consider making the 1500w version of this kettle available WITHOUT it's base, to go with this set for when you need the extra capacity, assuming the base is the same for both models, of course.3.) It is very good at avoiding overshoot (going above the target temp), but at the expense of noticeably slowing down the cycling of the heating element as it approaches the target temp. When I set the target temp for 205, it begins doing this cycling around 190, so it takes a while to reach final temp. This may be unavoidable, but it seems overly conservative at applying heat long before it reaches the target temp.4.) Presets are nice, but why not let us STORE our target temps, overwriting the default ones, and the unit remembering what we set in each temperature "slot"? Say you make Green Tea at 178 in the afternoon and Coffee at 204 in the morning, and don't need any other choices. You could store these temps in every other memory setting, thereby only requiring one button push to change to the other temperature, creating the equivalent of a toggle between two custom temperatures. With the six temp memory slots, you could also store three different temperatures, each twice. The goal here is reduced button pushing.5.) At first it bothered me that the temp display keeps showing the temp for up to an hour even when the unit has reached target temp and shuts off. However, I figure it's useful to know that the pot is still warm/hot, and probably doesn't use much electricity to display the temp anyway. The only way I could find to get the temp display to turn off is to turn the unit on, then immediately off.6.) The minimum setting of 140 may still be too high for some folks if they just want some warm water to drink.7.) The tip of the pouring spout is VERY sharp and would cut a hand, finger, or worse if struck or jabbed into someone by accident. 2.0 out of 5 stars Builds up deposits quickly, temp display jumps around First off, I need to say that Bonavita seems to offer clever products with well-thought-out design BUT that the build of those products have always seemed flawed to the point of being defective. I bought several of their immersion coffee drippers, which made great coffee until the switch controlling the flow of coffee INVARIABLY broke off. You'll see this complaint in multitudes of user reviews on Amazon. But instead of fixing the relatively simple design issue, Bonavita opted to discontinue the dripper. Tells you something about the company, doesn't it?Annoying and deal-breaking build problems are also associated with this gooseneck kettle. There's a lot to like about the kettle. But there were two deal breakers for me.1) Reviewers are correct that some sort of crap builds up on the bottom of the kettle. I'd say it's rust, but seeing as how it started after only the second kettle of water I boiled, that seems unlikely. More likely it's some type of scale from the mineral content of the water...but I use filtered water, and this doesn't happen with, for example, my OXO 8-cup automatic brewer. EVER. I've used Dezcal descaler, and that cleans it up just fine...but it always comes back, and quickly. I complained to Bonavita and they immediately sent me a second kettle, without even asking for the first one back, which is a credit to them...but the second one wasn't any better, so I just said to heck with it and settled for constant descaling.2) The real deal-breaker was having to put up with the temperature control, both because of the way the kettle ALWAYS exceeds the set temperature, and because of fluctuations on the display once the kettle reached the target temperature I set. An example: I almost always set my kettle for 204, for making pourover coffee. The kettle will invariably heat to 208, and once it gets there, the display will fluctuate multiple times per second, reading rapidly flickering numbers that fluctuate between 200 and 208 and never settle down to a single readable temp. I discovered with my Thermapen instant read thermometer that the actual temp in the kettle is always the highest number in this jumpy display...but who wants to live with that? Descaling the kettle hasn't helped; neither has using contact cleaner on the contacts.When I originally bought the kettle, it was one of the few electric variable-temp goosenecks available. It was in fact the only one I could find. Since then, a number of less expensive alternatives have appeared on the market. Last month, I decided to go in the other direction and get a pricey one, the Stagg EKG Pro Electric Kettle, Studio Edition. I justified the expense by thinking about my years of frustration with the Bonavita and with the recognition that I use the kettle to make coffee every day and that my wife uses it to make tea almost every day. It's a beautiful kettle that functions flawlessly, and if the $225 price-tag doesn't make you run screaming in the other direction, you'll find it a joy to use and to own. 3 people found this helpful

4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the box. 1 Ltr review It works, but it's not 5 star perfect. Heats fast, faster than it ever would on a stove, but tends to overshoot the mark before coming back down. This is fairly common in devices like this as it's dumping so much power in to bring up the temperature as fast as it can. If you are looking to keep any spotting or discoloration from noticeably building stick to filtered water. Unless you have perfect glacier water out of the tap, in which case I envy you. The opening is pretty narrow (pic 1), get yourself a long or large-sized cotton dish towel that you can wad up inside to make it easier to dry. Kind of like you might do with a tall but narrow glass. I have small hands for a guy and I can just get my fingers inside to grab my towel and maneuver around the inside to dry. Thicker towels would be better than my flour sack style bar rags. For those unsure on how much liquid this holds I can fill four 12oz mugs with about 9-10oz of coffee each (have to leave room for milk and carrying around). I also tend to fill above the line a bit. see below as to why. The overall size is nice and puts away nicely in a cabinet when not in use, or can live on the counter while having a smaller footprint than most coffee pots, and much smaller than a Keurig pod style coffee maker.The biggest design flaw is the location of the fill line indicator. It's on the inside under the mounting point for the handle. Meaning I can't monitor the level while I am comfortably holding it to fill, and if you come in from the side the top handle mount keeps you from seeing the top line unless you view it from a pretty extreme angle. So I am left guessing until I can spin it around to see the lines again (see pics for holding vs line placement). This doesn't affect the functionality of the kettle heating or pouring so I didn't take a star off, but thought you should know. 5.0 out of 5 stars Cute small digital stainless steel coffee maker First, general dimensions: The unit (when sitting on base) is about 7 inches high; the base is about 7 inches by 8 inches (width and length). It is almost (two tiny exceptions inside unit look like silicone fittings) all stainless steel where the water resides. It is really an adorable "little" tea kettle; it holds about a quart (liter it says), and it has a 1000 watt heater. For a small unit like this, it heats up to 200 degrees (I only fit it half full) in a about three minutes, depending on water temp you put in it). I love the digital read out that tells you the exact temperature you are on (and when you turn it on, the temp climbs on the read out til it hits what you set it at). There are some preset temps like 200, but then you can customize it to a higher or lower amount (I set mine at 204 degrees) and no other model has this feature (that I could find). Once you get to the temp, if you want, you can press the hold button, and it will stay at that temperature until you pick up the kettle off the base. To me (besides the fact that it is cute and has a small footprint on my counter) the best feature is the digital control (and it seems to be very accurate). The one thing which is a slight problem is the small top (which has an adjustment to make removal of the cap easier or harder). I don't like to leave any water in the pot after pouring most of it out for my coffee, and a little water stays in as the spout does not allow all the water to flow out. We are talking a tablespoon or so, but I like it almost totally empty. Trying to get the little bit of water out of the top is a little challenging because of the design and construction of the top part. I use rain water, so I have no issues with mineral deposits, but the company gives some very specific instructions or periodic cleansing of these built up deposits. You never want to have to clean the inside of the unit through ordinary means as the space is quite limited, and the gooseneck spout would be almost impossible to clean with a brush or whatever. The unit has a one year warranty, so make sure you keep your receipt and don't abuse the little thing. So far I am very happy with how it heats the water and pours out into my paper cone on my Chemex. However, it is not the fastest little kettle; it takes a few minutes just to heat 16 ounces of water (1000 watt unit), so if you are short on time, this might be a problem. My Cuisinart probably did it in half the time. One more thing, the unit comes with a light semi-clear plastic cover that fits over most of the base (except the very center where the pot gets its heat from the electric heating unit); this light cover protects your unit from water spillage and it is clear enough that you can still easily read the digital readouts on the front (base area). Postscript: Someone pointed out to me (in my earlier review I commented about a short cord) that the cord is wound up on the bottom of the unit and unwinds to be plenty long for reaching most outlets, and they are certainly right. I searched many sites, many weeks, and read many reviews and descriptions.*I wanted the most healthy so as close to 100% high quality stainless steel was tops. Whatever part has to be silicone to create a seal is BPA free. I found no other kettle with this small amount of non-stainless that touches the water.*I wanted it to have multiple temps for the various teas & coffees. It has all the typical tea-specific temps and more.*I wanted it to hold the temp long enough to enjoy for a while. It holds the temp for about an hour!*The perk I hadn't expected is that the kettle shows the temp as you take it off and replace it. So, basically, you pretty much know all the time what the temperature is.*I wanted it to be easy to lift and direct the flow of hot water to either fill a cup or to pour over grounds. This is great for small cups and for blooming grounds properly.*I wanted something efficient, that heated the water quickly. I'm always surprised how quickly it heats up.*I wanted to be able to control the temperature other than set temps. Not only does this have the various settings, you can manipulate that manually with ease; I'm not locked in.*I didn't want a kettle that requires heating up a huge amount of water which wastes energy; this doesn't. Since it heats quickly, adding more water doesn't add a lot of new wait time. I have yet to not have enough water to in one kettle to meet my needs. If we were to have a lot of company or something, the wait time wouldn't be a problem.*I wondered, with so many kettles having a side peek-a-boo window to see the water level if I would miss that. I don't. The lid on the kettle is easy enough to remove and stays secure when pouring.*The narrow, curved up spout provides safety against a potential spill (actually seems to provide some counter balance) and is the best thing for having complete control over where the water goes and not a huge amount comes out at a time yet I've never been frustrated by the flow.*The extended arm, which I thought might take up too much room, doesn't. It's a small footprint and is worthy of being on the counter. I don't feel like the arm is delicate in some way or going to break off*Handle is comfortable, large enough for the man in the house, and is stay-cool. The extra bump inside the handle that falls between your fingers keeps your hand from slipping along the handle when it's heaviest at full capacity.*It easily fits under any upper cabinet.*If you're a tea lover, there's a counter on the unit to let you know how much longer for the optimum steeping time.*Not important to me, it can be set to show F' or C' degrees.*I've found a very small diameter cleaning brush for things like straws that I can use to clean the spout area if necessary. But since we only use purified water, I don't see the need.Soooo very glad I chose this model. I've no problems with operation thus far (bot as 2013 holiday present). Its' so comfortable to use and fast. I've never had better tasting tea due to the right temp and the right length of steeping. After all the searching and deciding, I'm very glad to have splurged on this unit. I was able to find it here at about 20% off the listed price, as low as any other place on the net. Still good, but there are better units aplenty on the market now.Replaced the original unit due to a leak having developed at the base of the neck. Solid run for the product overall.New unit after two weeks:Pros- longer cord, though the short cord had it's charms- heats faster, the system has less time between sample and heat cycles and starts testing temp later in the cycleCons- cord no longer has a guide and just comes out wherever, this unbalances the unit compared to the original- metallurgy is different. Even after a lot of solvent cleaning it still has an odor not related to manufacturing oil- randomly forgets whether the unit is set to centigrade or FahrenheitOther- empty space where the word "power" was on the original unit makes the label feel unbalanced 4 people found this helpful

I recently lost the base part of the kettle (I travel with it a lot) and was hoping to get another but the price seems to have jumped and there’s rumor that the quality isn’t as good as it was so I probs won’t buy again.If you have the proper tools to care for it, it’s definitely good to consider. I don’t quite recommend if you plan to do long term daily use as it starts to malfunction a bit causing the temperature to register incorrectly or water will leak from the neck area which will drip to the base if you’re not careful.The hold button consistently worked though it sometimes would maintain on a temperature that’s 1 to 2 degrees off from the desired degree. I had the kettle for about a year and would use it on a semi-daily basis. It travelled with me fairly well until I misplaced the heating base but that’s my fault lolI don’t think the price is quite worth the product but hopefully this helps :) 2 people found this helpful

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful kettle. I've had this kettle for over a year now and absolutely love it. I use it just about daily, sometimes 2-3 times a day. Using this kettle to make coffee and tea is seriously one of my small pleasures in life.The spout on this kettle is essential if you use a Chemex or similar pour over method. You can control the pour very well with it. I had a more snub nosed kettle before, and using it for a pour over caused a mess of water everywhere.I love how I can turn it on and it'll heat the water at the temp I want and keep it there while I shower and get ready. This is one of my favorite features. I can "set it and forget it" until I'm ready to make coffee or tea (for up to an hour anyway).I love a few other "little" things, like how they include a plastic cover for the base to protect the it from water damage. Plus, the electronics are rather smart. They include several common preset temps that you can cycle through, and it'll remember the last temp you used. The base also has a timer, which is great for making coffee. They definitely put some thought into this kettle!It does get some corrosion in it like any kettle does. What I've found is that really wiping down the spout and the surface after each use with a dry towel helps with this. Even a little bit of water on the spout will cause it to corrode down the back of it. I was able to clean most of the corrosion off of mine, and wiping it down better has prevented any further corrosion so far.I also set the lid on its side across the top after each use so it can air out (see pic). I only noticed a very small amount of rust in the holes on the lid, which I cleaned off pretty easily.Cleaning the kettle with Dezcal is also a must (it's in the manual). I've only had to clean mine twice so far and it seems to work well at removing what little corrosion it gets. I've attached a pic of what the inside of the kettle and the lid looks like after a year of daily use. I just cleaned it with Dezcal today, but it didn't look bad before that.If you make tea and/or coffee daily, I definitely recommend spending a bit extra and getting this kettle.Edit: going on four years now. Taking off a star because the handle has broken twice. 5.0 out of 5 stars Temperature control is great I repurchased this kettle after the previous version broke when the gooseneck spout separated from the joint at the connection point, probably because we never demineralized the kettle. The previous kettle was larger at 1.5L but this smaller one does the trick too.I like that the temperature control is precise and that there are several temperatures saved in the base's memory. While the user can't adjust these memory temperatures, at least it gets you close enough to fine tune the temp with the +/- buttons. We make various brews of coffee, green tea, black tea and herbal tea in our house and it's really nice to easily set different temperatures for each beverage.I once measured the temperature inside the kettle with a digital cooking thermometer and the read out was the same number as on the kettle, so I'm satisfied that the temperature is accurate.I haven't had any issues with the base going kaput, like others have. I suspect this may be in part because we've always used the protective cover that came with the base. In fact, the base from the kettle that broke still works great and we've kept it as a spare part to use with this new kettle if needed. I encourage others to always use the protective cover, too. Every coffee nut (you know who you are!) needs this Bonavita variable temperature gooseneck kettle.I love to experiment with different techniques to brew our morning coffee. The best coffee I have been able to make so far is with the AeroPress, but I need to make 20 ounces of coffee each morning and unfortunately I cannot figure out a good way to make 20 ounces at one time with the AeroPress. This means most of my experimentation is with pour over techniques, varying the amount of coffee I use, pouring and brewing times, and water temperatures. It is hard to hit a particular target temperature with a kettle or saucepan on the stove, or with a microwave, so for some time I have had my eye on Bonavita's variable temperature kettle.I delayed for a long time because I was afraid my wife, who thinks our coffee is pretty good already, would chastise me for ordering another expensive toy to aid with my coffee tinkering. To my surprise, she was very supportive - her only comment was "That's fine, I can use it to make tea for my book club".I have now used the kettle and it really is a good addition to my coffee gear. My morning routine has been to set up the pour over funnel, put beans in the grinder and water in the microwave, then turn on the grinder and the microwave as I sit down to read the paper and eat my cereal. When my cereal is done I hope the microwave has hit the right temperature, but I usually have to blast the water for another twenty seconds or so to get close to the temperature I want, which of course also requires checking with a thermometer.The Bonavita greatly simplifies my routine by hitting and holding my exact target temperature. As a great bonus, the gooseneck is a delight to pour. The Bonavita's water stream is much more controllable than pouring from our Pyrex measuring cup.I notice some previous reviewers have been concerned about rust forming inside the Bonavita's cap. From other reviews, it appears Bonavita may have changed the way they way they finish the cap, but I think the biggest issue may be whether people leave the cap wet inside or dry it off after each use. I dry off the cap and leave it resting sideways in the top opening between uses so that the heat in the empty kettle will dry out any remaining moisture in the kettle and the cap.All in all, we are very pleased with our new Bonavita kettle. 5 people found this helpful

Bonavita's support site acknowledges this defect and sends a replacement out right away. If you decide to buy this kettle, check the date code on the bottom of the heating base. If you find codes 1425, 1427, or 1429 go to (...) right away and order your replacement base. Now for the rest of the review.I purchased this kettle for making coffee drinks and especially V60 pour overs. The goose-neck kettles give you much more control over your pour, which will still require a little practice. In comparing this to my previous Cuisinart electric kettle, there are some features it had that I miss with the Bonavita. Here's a quick bullet list of the good and the not-so-good.The Good* Goose Neck Spout - The goose neck spout gives you greater control in the amount you want to pour and the area you want to pour. V60 coffee brewing requires that control.* Variable Temp - The variable temperature setting gives you control ranging from 140 - 212F. This allows for a better brew for French press, Aeropress, V60 coffees brews, and various teas.* Care - Because of what I've read in other reviews about rust and/or corrosion, I empty any left over water and let this air dry. We have hard water, so descale this per the instructions. I've only done this once, but will do so monthly. I use Joe Glo.The Not-So-Good* HI ERR Error - This one qualifies as "bad", but since they're replacing it, I list it as "not-so-good" for now. Follow the above instructions to replace your kettle and don't wait for it to fail.* Hold Button - This is a good feature, but lacks the convenience of my Cuisinart. The hold button allows you to walk away from your kettle and it will hold your desired temp when you return for your brew. My Cuisinart would automatically continue to hold once you took the kettle off of the base and set it back on. This is very convenient for Aeropress and V60 brews. The Bonavita requires you to turn the kettle back on and depress the hold button again when you put it back on the base.* No Audible Tone - I liked that the Cuisinart would beep when it reached your desired temperature. The Bonavita has no audible tone. This may not be that big of a deal with the Hold button.I would recommend this kettle if you are a coffee or tea fan that likes to brew with accurate temperatures and pour control. Temperature control is good, not too difficult to clean if you follow their instructions, heats up quickly, and pours well.Unfortunately, they simply don't last. All three of mine have had their bases fail just beyond the warranty window. They would fail to heat, show 0 00 error codes, or have temperature settings jumping all over the place. 5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Electric Kettle for the Non-Techniphobe Wow, what a detailed instruction manual this comes with!There are 6 buttons on the base, along with an LED display. I was expecting something more basic, but it's certainly not a bad thing that the kettle has so many features. It's not as easy as "plug in and turn ON."Once you've reviewed the instructions and set up the kettle with your personal preferences (using the afore mentioned buttons), it's simple enough to use. The exterior does become hot to the touch, and it is recommended that you place it on an uncluttered surface where it won't come into contact with anything else. If you have hard water, it is recommended that you use a brand-name product to remove the inevitable scale build-up. You cannot put the kettle into the dishwasher to clean it. The manual explains what temperature setting to use for coffee and tea (even specifying temperatures for black, green and oolong teas.) Allowing for differences in elevation is also recommended when selecting the temperature. (As I implied above, it does get a little technical.) The "boil" temperature is said to be 205 degrees F (at a relatively low altitude.) You have the option of using the Celsius temperature measure. The goose neck DOES allow for a very controlled pour. The kettle does not whistle, nor will you see steam escaping from the spout at the specified temperatures. I am happy with the coffee and tea I have made using it. The one-liter kettle heats your water very quickly--16 ounces only takes 1--1 1/2 minutes. You must wait 1 minute before refilling it to use it again. Just make sure that you have the necessary space for this on your counter and be prepared to spend some time familiarizing yourself with its operation.Also--and this may be an issue for many people--it is recommended that you NOT plug it into an outlet connected to a circuit with any other appliance requiring a heavy load. (I may not have worded that correctly but hopefully you'll get the idea.) Apparently it uses a lot of "juice."I'd say that it is a premium product. This is probably one of the best choices if you want something that will go the distance and that will last. It's solid and does not slide around on your counter. It works efficiently and quietly, does more than you think you'd need, & is attractive. I would say that it's worth the price, especially given the problems/complaints people have about other electric kettles (even those with very recognizable import brand names, most of which are made in China anyway.) I was very surprised to find out that those French and Italian brand names did not indicate the country of origin. So don't be lured into thinking you're buying something made in a European country synonymous with style or craftsmanship. Pretty is as pretty does. 3.0 out of 5 stars Good temp holding, but I question the build quality I have had the kettle for four days now, and here is my impression.What I like:It appears to do a pretty decent job holding temperature, seemingly staying within +- 2 degrees of target.It only requires a handful of button presses to input the target temperature.The cord keeper in the base is handy, and built so you can adjust how much cord extends out of the base.The digital readout is bright, very legible, and nicely angled.The buttons are tactile, and click slightly when you press them.The handle is reasonably comfortable, and the lid attaches securely, yet it is not difficult to remove.The pour is very controllable.The one liter capacity is more than enough to do a pourover for two 8oz cups.What I don't like:The build quality is questionable.While the goose neck spout appears to be braised or welded to the body of the kettle (it seems pretty sturdy), it was attached crooked (c'mon, seriously?).The curved bend of the spout is showing a kink in one spot.The ends of the spout - both where it meets the body and the end where the water exits are poorly finished. The inside where it attaches to the body has hanging "chads" or filings that are obstructing the flow of water, and the end where the water exists has burrs. I suspect that these obstructions are what keep this from flowing as fast as and smoothly as my Hario. I may clean these up myself at some point.The outside surface finish of the metal is kind of rough. They could, and should, have taken it to another step of smoothness. The surface is rough enough where I could file my nails on it.The black heating element cover that is attached at the base of the kettle is not seated evenly.The logo is printed as opposed to being stamped into the metal, and I fully expect it to wear off (this could be a good thing).The steps to follow (button presses) to set the temperature are easy enough, but I have to press the power button each time I return the kettle to its base.It comes with a thin, translucent, PE cover for the base to protect it during "frequent use". Seriously? You mean that this kettle base wasn't made to handle the inevitable splash of water, and so I have to keep it covered with this ugly plastic cover that looks like I left the packing material on?The 1 liter max fill level line is stamped on the inside, and while not a big deal, is not easy to see.Sometimes when heating up, it seems to slow down to a crawl as it approaches the target temperature.The base feels like a thin piece of plastic.In conclusion: It operates well, but a bit more attention to fit and finish is needed.Update: I have this kettle since November, 2012. I estimate that it is used over 400 times each year - so about 2000 pots of water. This morning it died. For those of you that consider about 4 years of life a good deal - go for it.I had to go back to my non-electric Hario this morning. I had forgotten how much better the pour is on the Hario. The way the spout is connected to the pot means if water is left in it, and the water is at all acidic, it will eventually leak where the spout is connected to the body of the pot. May take a while, but once it does you have to get a new pot and I have purchased several of them. Other than that, it is great.

I feel a bit guilty as I purchased mine in 2013 and have been using it for 9 years with no problems!Update: 4 Dec 2015. I've now owned this kettle for almost 3 years and use it daily. Wiping the interior dry after each use means I still have no rust. Great kettle, good service and should I ever damage this one, I would replace it with the same item in a heartbeat!After receiving something new and shiny there is always a temptation to dash off a review within a short time, but I decided to wait until this Bonavita 1-Liter Variable Temperature Digital Electric Kettle had given a significant amount of service before rating it.I purchased it on 20 Feb 2013 and it has been in use from the day of arrival. As of this review, that translates to 20 months of daily, easy to use, trouble-free performance.I looked long and hard for an electric kettle with universally variable temperature settings, since most have pre-set temperatures that would not serve. I drink Yerba Mate in the Argentine manner--in a mate gourd with bombilla--and boiling or very hot water makes for a very bitter, painful sipping experience. I found that water heated to 67C/152F yields a mate with repeated pour-overs that neither burn the mouth nor wash out the yerba too quickly. This kettle will heat and hold that temperature perfectly for as long as the yerba will last.The kettle also works well for all manner of green teas and filter-cone coffee; none of which should be made with boiling water. I found it less satisfactory for black tea, as the kettle cannot be set for a true boil unless one lives at an altitude where water boils at or below 98C/208F, which is the highest temperature setting possible.Others have noted rust in the lid or around the bottom. I found that by drying the interior of the still-warm kettle (mind the temperature probe!) after use has side stepped this problem. The gauge of the steel used in construction hasn't been an issue, but I haven't dropped or knocked the kettle about, which might cause a problem.It solved my problems of making a perfect mate, and has given trouble-free service to boot. 4 people found this helpful

5.0 out of 5 stars NO rust and NO aluminum! (Some plastic though) I looked a LONG time for a kettle without any plastic or aluminum. Every glass kettle I found had some plastic in it that came in contact with water or steam. But this kettle works very well and I just cannot find a kettle with NO plastic inside. And so many of the metal kettles had reviews that mentioned rust pretty quickly. This kettle has a rigid plastic handle and the top of it has a screw inside the pot at the top anchored in the same plastic. It never touches the water, but it will definitely be in the steam. Sigh.The plastic handle stays cool to the touch. It has seen daily use since purchase and it’s never been dry- we just keep adding more water and boiling it. The opening is a tight fit for a man’s hand but most women will be able to get their whole hand inside if they ever needed to clean it. But I don’t need to clean it- I literally sanitize it every day by boiling it. There is zero rust. This is very well made. It’s very easy to use and the holding feature is a nice luxury.I just wish it didn’t have plastic in the chamber. 3 people found this helpful

Thankfully it's a pretty good one, but it does have some issues.+accurate temperature reading+doesn't "overshoot" the temperature+gooseneck spout feels very nice to pour, gives accurate control. feels like luxury if you know what I mean+heats small amounts of water fast+one hour temperature hold+the bottom doesn't get hot-build quality issuesThe spout looks like it was just sloppily welded in place, and not even straight. Mine is a little off kilter. Doesn't effect anything functionally. The metal also came a bit stained or scuffed up on the outside.-rust issuesWhile I haven't had any rust myself (yet?) there are a lot of complaints about it in the comments and I think I can see why. In the instructions, it says to dry out the kettle with a towel after use. Really? I mean, it's a kettle, you know, for water? It gets wet; it should be able to withstand the stuff it's designed to handle. On the inside, there are some nooks and crannies where water could linger for a while if you don't wipe it out good enough, and I'll bet that users who got rust didn't go through the effort of drying every little spot every time they used their kettle, not that I blame them.-full pot can take a while to boilUsually I only heat up enough water for one cup, which is really fast, but it can take maybe 7-8 minutes or so if you want a full 1 liter of water. There are other kettles out there that heat up faster, so you might want to think about that if you plan on heating up a lot of water at one time.-slows down the heating towards the end of the cycleIt does this so it doesn't heat past your desired temperature, making you wait for the water to cool down. However, you end up waiting anyways because the kettle doesn't heat as fast as it comes near the temperature you want! The more water water you have in it, the longer you have to wait for it to inch its way up to the desired temp.-handle is uncomfortableA minor gripe, but it's there none the less. It does have weird directions starting out soo I broke the first one and was sent another only to be charged for both b.c of a delayed return ( my fault w.e). It last 6yrs did its job. I would clean it with vinegar and bring the heat up and everything would come off.Not sure if I am going to buy again as the price has gone up around $25-30. But for me, it was a great investment and I got my money's worth for sure. I would recommend, the others saying it died early. Idk maybe just lemons? I have had some weird stuff happen over the years (rarely) and on the longer side of owning but it would be like it wouldn't turn off. then I would unplug and it would reset and be fine, I probably owned it around 5yrs at that point.Right now it's just stuck on the same temp but it worked yesterday, hoping it just needs a good cleaning. all and all very good product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pour-over heaven If you are a coffee snob, this is a MUST OWN! If you're like me, the price of this has kept you teetering on the fence of "should I or shouldn't I?" Well, you should. Like many of you reading this, I too have indulged in the incredible world of pour-over coffee. I sincerely thought that "I would be fine" without a gooseneck kettle because who wants to drop $85 on this!? I tried my pour-over with a regular kettle and instantly made the decision to come back and purchase this one. The control of flow is VITAL for a successful pour-over and this kettle is amazing at just that; a slight tip gives a slow, controlled pour with zero splash-back. The other vital component to a successful pour-over is temperature. In the past, I always went the "just off the boil" route, but it's still a guessing game. This kettle lets you dial it in precisely to your needs. I set mine to 202 degrees. By the time my pre-infusion is complete, it's sitting right at 200 degrees; perfect for my needs! The hold feature is beautiful as the base unit will kick on and kick off to maintain your set temperature. That allows you to plug it in, turn it on, and walk out of the room without having to worry about it. When you come back, it's holding steady at your set temperature.If I HAD to gripe about it, some mild complaints as follows: Capacity. It's perfect for 2 mugs, but anything more than that and you'll have to refill it. Only fills my Bodum French Press 3/4 full. Think quality over quantity. Another small, yet obnoxious thing is having to repress the "hold" function key every time the pot is returned to it's base. If you don't, it won't reheat the water to the set temperature. The other annoying feature is the timer function. I love that it has a built-in time to help time my pre-infusion and draw down, but similar to the hold function, the settings seem to be reset when the pot comes off the base. In this case, the timer resets. Not a huge deal, but enough of an issue that I don't bother and use my phone timer instead.Initial review is 5-stary worthy. The only thing that can knock it down would be longevity. We'll see how it holds up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Need coffee... Make. Water. Hot. Now. Most Very Good. This is an electric kettle that makes water get hot. The best part is that I can tell it exactly how hot to make the water, and it will obey. Just a few simple buttons and I can brew my coffee to perfection. The design is such that the water pours out very smoothly and evenly, giving the pourer a great deal of control. I prefer that method over giving the water freedom, which will almost always result in a mess.The features are simple: a base station with the controls also functions as a stabilizer, but it does not contain the heating element. The kettle itself was promoted to that position, keeping the heating element safely contained in the bottom. I like that, because there isn't any easy way for me to burn myself on it.Controls you ask? A button turns it on. Another pair of buttons, (+/-) allow you to raise or lower the desired temperature. The unit can be set to Fahrenheit, but if you ever find yourself traveling to a non-Imperialist nation, you can switch it to Celsius and feel right at home. The final button is my favorite because it sets the desired temperature and will hold it as long as the kettle is on the base. If you remove the kettle then replace it, simply press that hold button and everything will gravitate back toward your initial desired temperature. Since water tends to cool off several degrees once removed from its heat source, I find this feature to be invaluable because it allows me greater control of the temperature variable, taking my coffee snobbery to dangerously high levels bordering those of organic chemistry.Since I purchased this kettle, I have yet to find a serious flaw. It heats up as quickly as a nuclear reactor firing up, and makes my coffee taste wonderful. I suppose if I had one criticism, it's the time it takes to stabilize the temperature in hold mode. Sometimes it will go several degrees higher than necessary, but I think that's more a condition of what the heating element is actually doing. If it gets too hot, I have to wait a few more seconds or it to drop to the proper temp. This really only annoys my coffee snobbery, because I also use a timer. I've just learned to watch it very closely. It's not rocket science here, folks.In closing, the Bonavita kettle is very highly recommended because it makes it much easier to brew mind-altering coffee. 4.0 out of 5 stars Good enough for brewing coffee I love coffee and its different brewing methods, especially V60, so I needed an electric kettle so I could control different aspects, so this Is my review on my 1-month use and comparing it with a Hario kettle that I used before:1. Temperature/Time: Well this is one of the greatest features of this kettle, it is fast. It is not surprisingly fast, but good enough (it takes 4-5 minutes to get 800 ml of water to a temperature of 95 celsius, with starting temperature around 21 C ), compared with the Hario (that was not electric). that you need AT LEAST 7-10 minutes for the same amount of water.2. Pouring: Hario takes the prize here. If you want to pour really small amounts of water, between 3-5g, the bona vita will make you sweat for it. The neck is completely horizontal, so even if you have a right pouring angel, with small amounts of water, the water will stick to the outer part of the neck and just drip in wrong areas (in my case, the water star dripping on the filter [something you always try to avoid while preparing a V60])3. Weight: There is nothing special in this area. The Bonavita has an adequate weight, good enough for any person to handle it, even when it is full (0.9L). Hario kettle is lighter because it does not have any of the electrical mechanism in it to add weight. On my opinion, not a deal-breaker.4. Price: I bought in on sale, it cost about 50$, which I think is a good price deal. But if I had to buy it for its original price (99.99$), I would wait for a little to get enough money to but the Fellow electric Kettle (price: 145$).5. 5.0 out of 5 stars Simple & Consistent Thoughts after three weeks of daily use:This kettle has simple controls, an easy to control spout, fast enough heating, and doesn't take up a lot of space. Pretty much everything I was looking for at a reasonable price.I only use filtered water in the kettle and always do a quick wipe to dry out the inside after use. So far, I have had zero problems with proper functioning, rust, leaks, etc. I was a bit paranoid after searching for weeks and finding terrible reviews on nearly every brand/product I looked at. I have noticed some very minor light spotting on the bottom, so someday it might require de-scaling, but it's not bad and I'm not worried.I tested temp. accuracy with a probe thermometer through one of the lid's vent holes, using a 3/4 full water level. At lower temps, the accuracy can be short by about 4-5 degrees. I chalk this up to the level of the internal temp. probe being at the very bottom of the kettle and mine being toward the top. At higher temps. it is much closer, within a degree or two as it maintains the temp. with the "Hold" feature. At the end of the day, not at all a deal breaker for me, and very easily compensated for.I have been very pleased so far. It's great to finally be able to easily and properly brew my teas. I used to think I just didn't like hot teas, so I cold-brewed everything. Now, I know I just don't like cheap tea that has been scalded in boiling water.I also use the Tea Time app on my phone to keep track of preferred temps and timers for each variety. Super handy!

5.0 out of 5 stars happy anniversary to my kettle I've only used it a few times and the bottom is pitting. The opening is too small to get your hand in to give it a good scrubbing so I can see why it will build up scaling like others have complained about. I will need to find a brush to get it cleaned out before it damages the pot. It is great looking 5 stars for that. Ease of use and serviceability 1 star. Sept 2014 Update on the Bonavita-- I got a nifty bottle brush but rarely need it any more. I've found if I let it cool down and empty the water before replacing it on the burner there is almost no scaling. It heats up really fast. And is gorgeous on my counter. The only downside I can find now is the impulse to grab it by the fragile spout instead of the sturdy handle. That would probably damage this pot. It holds enough water to fill my french press coffee maker with a bit left over to heat a cup, or I let it cool and water my plants since it has heated the water enough to get rid of the chlorine in the tap water. My plants are thriving. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a great looking kettle. It is a bit pricy but it is also beautiful and functional. It deserves a update from 3 stars to 5 April 2015 It has been a year now and I am still delighted with my kettle. No more scaling or pitting. You don't need the water hot enough to boil. 196 is perfect for coffee and tea. Setting the pot aside to cool before putting back on the stand seems to have cured the problem with the scaling. The spout is still fragile so care must be taken not to use it for lifting filling etc. I treat it like it is glass. I can see getting many years wear out of this. 5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect kettle for ADHDers. Flawless daily use for 6 years; happy customer, buying again. I have used this product daily for more than 6 full years. I am now buying a second one because I was so satisfied with this purchase. You choose a temperature. It heats to that temperature quickly. It holds that temperature for a while so if you wander off and forget you were going to make coffee/tea the kettle is still hot and waiting for you when you remember. If you TOTALLY forget, it will shut down after a long while so it's not a fire hazard. It even remembers the temperature you prefer between uses.After 6 years, my kettle still shows no signs of rust or pitting. I have had extremely little buildup or calcification issues - I mean, realistically I cleaned this thing maybe once a year. The last year or so, occasionally the kettle would have an issue with cycling off after it started to heat; I did not get to finish diagnosing the source of this issue, as it was intermittent. Today the handle snapped off as I lifted the kettle to put it away (empty - after I had finished pouring the water out of it, curiously!), so here I am, glad to see I can still buy another one! 3 people found this helpful

5.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly useful multitasker I purchased this kettle when I first got into pour over coffee. I've used it for 10 months now, and so far it has worked flawlessly. It heats up unto 1 liter of water to temperatures of 212F or less and maintains a constant temperature for upto an hour. The heat up time is very quick - quicker than using a microwave for a similar volume of water, but the real convenience is the hold feature, which lets you set the water up to heat and go off and do other things. You can choose Centigrade or Fahrenheit and it will remember your selection.My pour over setup is simple - the filter holder from a Bonavita coffee machine placed over the carafe of a Bodum French Press. The spout of this kettle is very well designed to work with this or really any pour over setup. I have not bothered to buy a dedicated pour over kit, since this setup makes excellent coffee without adding other gadget to my kitchen. In 10 months of use, I have not had it rust, and I certainly do not empty or dry it after each use. And while its primary purpose is to make coffee, I am surprised at how many other uses we have found for it - heating water to boiling to prepare brown rice in the oven, for sterilizing the spoons, forks, and small strainer I use to make yogurt, preheating flasks we use to keep food warm in, making tea - these are just a few examples. For all these applications, the quick heat up time is very useful. About the only thing I'd wish they'd have done different would be to not have to press a "hold" button to maintain temperature; the way it is set up now, if you do not do that, it will heat up and once it hits set point, start to cool down again. It is a minor inconvenience in an otherwise very well designed and useful appliance.Update: About 14 months after purchase, the kettle started showing occasional random temperature jumps while heating. Even though out of warranty, I contacted Bonavita and they promptly shipped me a replacement. One person found this helpful

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing if you get one that works The first one I bought didn't work. The temp. would flash like normal, and then just turn off. I could never even get it to start heating. I couldn't find anything else that does what this kettle does, so I returned the first one and got another. The second one has worked perfectly. I also got one as a wedding present for some friends and they haven't had any problems.It heats about as fast as other electric kettles, maybe just a little slower. When it gets to within about five degrees of the target temp., it slows down a lot to sort of dial-in. It hasn't bothered me. I usually turn it on and do something for a couple minutes while it heats up.For pour-over coffee brewing, I don't think there are any other options; unless you want to wait by your kettle with a thermometer and re-heat between rinsing, blooming, and brewing.I've read other reviews that mention a couple complaints that I'd like to comment on. First is that the base of the spout is about an inch above the bottom of the kettle. That's actually not true. It looks like it from the outside, but when you look inside it's all the way at the bottom. There must be some insulation below the base of the kettle that takes up the extra space.The second complaint is that it rusts. This is a thin steel kettle, and probably not very high-quality steel. However, I'm guessing that people who have had a problem with rust haven't been rinsing out the kettle very often. If you just keep putting water into it, and never rinse it out, you'll get a lot of mineral build up in the bottom. My theory is that this is causing it to rust quickly. I've seen the same thing happen with basic stove kettles and other electric kettles. Just rinse it out after every couple uses and I imagine it will last quite a while. 4 people found this helpful

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a great little kettle I got mine for 55, not sure how I feel about it being 130 right now, but it was absolutely worth it for me when I got it in Jan '21.I found that the steep timer stops around 6 minutes, and the timer only runs until you replace the kettle on the base, which was a little annoying, but other than that I have no complaints.I wouldn't do anything but heat water in it, as thoroughly cleaning anything from in/around the neck looks like it would be a bear. Being able to control the temp for different applications is a huge plus... the design is very appealing, as well (although the button graphics and mechanics will probably evolve to something a bit more stylish and sleek someday, I hope).Only Issue: They seem to have missed the boat on a quality control issue with the current batch. I purchased my first one over a year ago for my Aeropress, and have since purchased a second one for a separate location where I primarily use it for pour-over brew. The second one began giving me the "Hi Err" warning immediately upon first use. I figured that it may have been due to having it plugged in to a power strip, so I moved it to where it could be plugged directly to the outlet. No difference. Before getting too crazy about, I decided to do my research and saw that Bonavita seems to be aware of the issue and are practicing good business ethics by replacing the faulty base for those near sea level who are experiencing this issue. I had to leave a message upon my first attempt to contact their customer support line. Will keep this updated as the resolution unfolds. I'm hoping that they'll be able to refurbish the defective bases and not incur too much of a loss. I love their products, and will continue to highly recommend them.*UPDATE 6/10*After calling and leaving a message, they got back in touch with me later on the same day. They were friendly, and quickly took care of getting my info to send a replacement base. Will update again once the replacement has been received.*UPDATE 6/24*I received an email on 6/23 from UPS with a tracking number. I thought "hmmm... that's odd, I don't recall ordering anything recently...", opened it up, and then put 2 and 2 together... says it should arrive by 6/30. Still a happy customer thus far. And I'm also loving the Harrio scale/pour-over stand that I purchased the same day. Hope this endorsement doesn't disqualify this review... just wanted to share. Will submit a final update once the base arrives and works.*UPDATE 7/1*The replacement base arrived and functions perfectly. However, it is no different in terms of buttons or layout, etc... but it works, and that's all that really matters. Was excited at the possibility of receiving something updated, but it's all good. 4.0 out of 5 stars So far, so good I've been using this kettle for about six months now and am very pleased with it. It took me a little while to get used to operating it, but that was due to me trying to use it first thing in the morning in my pre-caffeinated state. The instruction guide is clear and the kettle has been designed logically.There are only two things I don't like about the kettle. One is that the highest setting for the preset temps goes to 208F. I wish I were able to take it all the way up to the max setting of 212F with one more touch, but that's a small complaint. My second complaint is that if you're using the hold button to maintain water temperature, you have to hit it again if you lift the kettle off the base then set it down again. This may sound petty, but it's a pain when I'm making something that requires adding water very slowly. Despite these annoyances, I'd buy the kettle again if I needed it today.Also, I've noticed that the kettle will sometimes 'hang' for about 30 seconds below the temperature I've set it for. For example, if I set it to 208F, it might stay stuck at 207F for several seconds before it hits 208. But it does get there eventually and there's no harm to the kettle, so I'm not bothered by that. This only happens sporadically and at higher temperatures (over 205F).Otherwise, the kettle works wonderfully. I use it heavily throughout the day because I like drinking warm water, so being able to keep water at temperature for an hour is very handy. Not having an alarm is a major bonus for me. I kind of wish that it had a timer on it, but that would likely make the base bigger and having a small footprint is better in my tiny kitchen. I've not had issues with rust, but I also wipe the kettle dry at the end of each day. Even though it cost more than I wanted to spend, it does 95% of what I need it to do and does it very well, so I feel like it's giving me my money's worth.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it until it broke after 4 years This was a great electric kettle, but mine broke almost exactly on the four year mark. The joint between the spout and the body of the kettle started to leak. I like to try to fix items I own in need of repair, but joining two bits of metal in a food safe way isn't easy. I am sad to see the price has doubled since I first bought this item too. I'm not going to buy another one at this new price if it'll only last a few years. 2 people found this helpful

5.0 out of 5 stars Great kettle still working after 6 years* This kettle has been rock solid for 6 years (so far) - although it did stop working after a few years, like many reviewers have noted. Good news is, it is really simple to fix!. Anyone can do it: Referring to the photo, note that the electrical contact between the base and the kettle itself is made via this small copper tab on the center of the base (see arrow in photo). The copper tab relies on spring tension to make contact with the kettle, and over time, it gets slightly less springy. Here's how to restore the kettle to functioning in about 10 seconds:1. UNPLUG THE KETTLE. Do not skip this step. Unplug it. Unplug it.2. Use something like a small screwdriver or even the tine of a fork to gently pull/bend the copper tab toward the outside of its opening. It does not need to move much at all - you may not even notice the distance, but the kettle will resume working after this.3. Plug the kettle back in again. (You unplugged it, right?)The kettle worked flawlessly for the first few years we had it, but once this problem started, I've had to bend the copper tab out regularly, about once a month. I've been thinking of melting a small drop of solder on it to see if that will extend the tab just far enough to fix the problem permanently, but it's honestly so easy to bend the tab, I haven't gotten around to testing the solder idea…Hope it helps! 16 people found this helpful

5.0 out of 5 stars Served me well for 3-4 years This worked great for making coffee, for a while. It has the right set of features, no more no less - adjustable temperature and a timer. Holds more than enough water for making one or two cups of coffee, and pours fast enough to be useful in other scenarios too. Unfortunately sometime after 3 years of use, the buttons started to mostly not work, so I have to repeatedly press them or press them much harder. I always kept the plastic cover on the base too. It's out of warranty so I will be replacing it, and trying a different kettle now. 4 people found this helpful

5.0 out of 5 stars After 5y, I’m buying a third kettle 2018 EDIT:Still five stars five years later, and I’m about to buy my third 1L bonavita kettle.I spent the week reading reviews figured I would try something different, but Amazon says I bought this pot five years ago, and it still working like new (and I use it every day).I don’t want to risk buying another brand where I cannot control the temperature the way I want. This kettle remembers your last setting when you push one button.You can set the temperature to anything you want it remembers it. There is a button that cycles through preset temperatures, but then the arrow keys allow you to zoom in on exactly the temperature you want. This is probably not very important for coffee or basic black tea, but if you are really a tea drinker temperatures vary dramatically (people brew Japanese green tea for example Starting at around 120°F). Although my favorite senchas brew from 160 to 170 F.When you push the button to heat the water, it remembers the last setting and it heats up to that setting and holds it the temperature to within about 1°. I believe there is a timeout feature but it has never intruded on my tea drinking. For your second and third brews you have to remember to hit one button when you put the pot back on the base (so it will hold the temperature).The gooseneck spout is the best there is for pouring into those little teapots, or for pour over coffee as well. But if you are very impatient this might be a disadvantage if filling a large cup is your only use for this pot.After reading complaints on Amazon of the temperature being off, I checked mine with a cooking thermometer at 170°F, it was spot on. This is the one that has been abuse for five years.My previous review below sucks (reading it five years later). I believe I was comparing the Bonavita kettle to the basic on off kettles. Shortly after I started using it there is no confusion whatsoever with what button to push. I mean come on there are only four buttons.For one person definitely choose the 1 L size. I keep mine full of water, or else if you don’t use it every day the water could become musty. The larger size for one person risks boiling the oxygen out of the water (which is not optimal for making tea or coffee). With the smaller size more freshwater is cycled through that hasn’t been boiled to death.~2013 EDIT:Its really hard to find a water pot that pours well (although most of the electric stainless steel ones do).. Havent actually used this yet for pour over, but I can tell it will work great (because you can aim the pour and the water volume seems about right)..CON;Slightly slower to heat water because it cycles on and off while the electronics control heating (no big deal for me). Pours slow if you just want to fill up a cup then dunk a tea bag in (kind of a pain).. If I did not want this for pour over use specifically, I would not recommend the skinny spout..PRO:Spout pours great for aiming into little teapots, or for pour over coffee.. The temp setting IMHO is great. Much more convenient than speed of heating. I have a manual induction water pot that heats very quickly. But it will boil like mad if I don't stay and watch it. This pot will hold a temp, so it is more convenient to walk away and come back in a few.I Haven't played with the temp enough to check it out completely. But it is at least adequate. It does not go full steam ahead to get up to the temp setting, so it takes a little longer (you can hear it cycling on/off). I believe it is slightly more quiet than my old electric pot. It does remember my last setting (now if only I could remember which button to push to start it.. I wish the main button were different than the others). I suppose I will eventually remember which one it is..I chose the smaller one because I only put the water I want to heat, into the pot (then expect an empty pot to dry afterwards). BUT I find it difficult to drain the pot completely .. When I try I end up pouring out the lid too.. Not a deal breaker. But I don't like my water to get stale. But leaving water in the pot can draw a musty smell over time, and heating the same water over multiple times will boil the oxygen out so it deosnt brew well (but perhaps Im overthinking this part).. 3 people found this helpful

4.0 out of 5 stars Great kettle, remember to descale Love this gooseneck kettle, though I’ll admit, this is my second after little less than 4 years. the first started leaking at the base of the spout where it meets the kettle and you can only purchase the entire system, not just the kettle replacement (or I’d have given it five stars). Just remember to de-scale it. Recently my pot suddenly began to make a lot of noise when heating up the water. After descaling works perfectly and silently as new (hardly any visible scale in the pit because I only used filtered water). I used a simple solution of citric acid rather than purchasing the expensive descaling powder or premade solution. 2 people found this helpful

It was an upgrade from the regular (stove top) Bonita gooseneck and it was one of the best decisions of my life. Sad to say it is no longer going up to the temperature set 😕 sorta just stops heating up randomly. Only has a one year warranty. Good thing it only cost me $51 back then. Thanks Bonita!

4.0 out of 5 stars Chronic problem with spout connection I LOVE my variable temperature kettle however this is my 3rd one. After about 1 year, the seam that connects the spout to the body of the kettle leaks and water spills over everything. That makes the kettle essentially unusable. I contacted the manufacturer requesting a new kettle and they refused. If you purchase it with the expectation that it will leak in about a year, then this is the kettle for you. Otherwise, it's wonderful. Until I can find something else that works as well, I'm using this one. 2 people found this helpful

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Kettle for Adjustable Temp When we got an AeroPress in July 2018, we realized we needed a convenient way to heat the water to a specific temperature, since you should not be using boiling water for your AeroPress. I reviewed a number of adjustable temp kettles before deciding on this one. Specifically, I was looking for one with an easy to set temp that also remembered the previous setpoint. This one fit the bill, and we bought it a week after we bought the AeroPress.For over a year and a half, this has been cranking out hot water for us. Typically it is used twice each morning for coffee for my wife and I, who usually get up and moving at different times, and in the winter I use it considerably for making tea throughout the day.Turns out, maintaining the previous setpoint wasn't all that useful after all (though it still is nice), since my wife and I have settled on different temps for making coffee in the Aeropress. What is useful is the quick temps. With one button, it cycles through preset temps of 140, 176, 185, 190, 205, and 208 °F (or equivalent °C if in °C mode), and we've ended up using this almost exclusively. I brew coffee with the 176 °F setting, my wife uses 185 °F. Since you have to add water after you use the AeroPress (or milk/etc), I usually brew the coffee, then set the pot back on the base and tap the preset temp button several times to the 208 °F to top off my mug with really hot water, as I like hot drinks. So we typically are pressing this button numerous times per day, and they've obviously used quality buttons since it shows no signs of wearing out. The temp can be adjusted in 1 °F increments from the preset using the + and - buttons (and again, it always turns back on to the last used temp, whether that is a pre-set or custom temp). Adjustable range is 140 °F to 212 °F.Temp accuracy: If I put my meat thermometer right at the temp sensor, the thermometer reads ~2 °F higher than the kettle. Not a big deal, and explains why a roiling boil happens at a displayed 210 °F and it never reaches 212 °F.Hold button: By default, the pot shuts off when it reaches the set temp. Pressing "hold" will have the pot maintain the set temp for an hour before turning off. You can press hold as soon as you turn the pot on and it will climb to your set temp and hold. Great for turning the pot on and taking a shower, and it will be at just the right temp when you get back to it.Cleaning: They say to use only a "special" cleaner that they sell...go figure. Nah, I put half a pot of vinegar, half a pot of water, turn to the 208 °F preset and "hold" for an hour. When I get back to it all the calcium buildup is gone. Rinse with water and refill for your next use.Rust: I've seen people mention rust. One time I thought I saw signs of rust, but cleaning with vinegar removed it and I haven't seen it since. Maybe it was iron in the water or maybe something was growing. Not sure.Calcium: As with all pots used to boil hard water, calcium will build up on the bottom. This starts flaking off after some time, and with the spout going to the bottom of the pot any calcium flakes that break off will come right out of the spout immediately on pouring. This could be an issue depending on your point of view. If you don't like this, get a pot with a top-pour spout and this won't happen. Cleaning more often or using distilled water are two ways you can fix this. The other way is to just not drink your coffee/tea to the very bottom of your cup, i.e. don't tilt your cup "up" past horizontal and leave just a tad in the bottom and you won't accidentally "drink" these calcium bits.Other: The pot can swivel 360° on the base, and since it has a temp sensor in the pot the power and temp signals are transmitted through the use of a pin and 4 concentric rings of metal on bottom the pot that contact 5 spring loaded pins in the base (the power pins are recesses and cannot be touched on accident, plus the base will not supply power if the pot is missing). I have noticed (only occasionally) that something, I assume minor corrosion, will occasionally throw off the temp reading or recognizing that a pot is attached. Usually this seems to happen if you put the pot at a different angle then normal. If this happens, the fix is easy. With the pot fully lowered on the base, just swing it back and forth a few times until the temp display stops changing when the pot is rotated. Again, I've only noticed this once or twice. Could have just been a piece of dust or something got on a contact.Summary: Great pot, accurate temps, handy pre-sets, holds last temp in memory, reliable and long lasting. Will definitely order again if we need a replacement or if we want a dedicated one for our RV rather than taking this one with us. 19 people found this helpful

Flow rate is pretty unrestricted, so if you are using this for more delicate things (like gongfu tea or espresso) where you want the least distubance as possible it may take some extra attention to make sure it comes out slowly. The price hike on this to $100 is ludicrous. imo if you're gonna spend more than $70 you may as well spring for a Stagg EKG for $150. You don't have to turn it back on everytime you lift the kettle from it's base. The hold temperature function is a switch rather than a button toggle that (yes) you have to press again everytime you lift it from its base. Basically bonavita assumes that you'll make your beverage and walk away for several hours. If that's you feel free to save $50 However, if you plan to stick around for a tea session, or to have a second or third cup of coffee get a Stagg.
